To ensure seamless communication through external apps and integrations, sometimes candidates’ phone numbers must include the appropriate country code. In Recruit, you can update a candidate’s country code in the following ways.

Edit the country code manually

  1. Navigate to the relevant candidate and click the ✏️pencil next to the candidate status.

  2. Select the correct country code and Save
  3. Add the country code + the candidate’s phone number in the Phone field.

  4. Click Save.

Save or edit the country code suggested by Recruit

Some features, such as reaching candidates by phone, require a country code. If a candidate's phone number doesn’t include the country code, Recruit will attempt to suggest the most relevant one by scanning multiple data points related to the candidate and the position.

For example, if the candidate has specified their phone number and country of residence in their resume or if the candidate has applied to a job in a specific location, Recruit will use this information to suggest the most likely country code.

To save the country code suggested by Recruit:

  1. Select the relevant candidate and navigate to the Details tab or click on the Phone icon 📞 next to the candidate’s name at the top.

  2. Check if there’s a “⚠️ Country code is missing” alert.

    • If the country code is missing, review the suggested country code, click Suggested: +123 (…), and Recruit will update the candidate’s number with the country code.

    • If there’s no suggested country code or you do not wish to use the suggested country code, you can manually edit the candidate’s phone number:

      1. Click Edit and enter the country code manually.

      2. Save your changes.

Auto-add a country code

Consider you're certain that applicants for a particular position will exclusively come from a specific country. Recruit can help you streamline the process by automatically adding the country code of the position’s primary location to candidates' phone numbers for SMS features.

To automatically add a country code to a position:

  1. Navigate to the relevant position.

  2. Click the settings icon ⚙️ and scroll down to find the Auto-add country code option.

  3. Check the checkbox next to Automatically add country code to candidates’ phone, if missing for SMS features.

Once enabled:

  • Recruit will only add the country code automatically when a candidate reaches a step that requires a country code.

  • Recruit will add and save the country code based on the primary location of the position. Please ensure that you have set a location that includes a country.

📝 Note: You always have the option to manually update the country code for individual candidates in the future if you need to.

Recruit will not add a country code:

  • If the candidate’s phone number already includes a country code.

  • If the candidate’s application does not include a phone number.

  • Before the candidate reaches a step that requires a country code.

⚠️ Important: This feature is super handy, but it's important to be mindful of unexpected applicants from different countries. For example, if you're adding the Canadian country code to all applicants' numbers, you might accidentally match someone else's phone number if an applicant from another country applies. So, before you activate this feature, take a moment to consider your recruitment needs and the types of applicants you're expecting.

Update the country code when starting specific steps

If you attempt to start a step that requires a country code and Recruit detects that the candidate’s phone number does not include one, you will get an alert to update it. In these cases, you’ll need to:

  1. Select a country code from the options.

  2. Click OK.

Optionally, you can also select to auto-add a country code for future candidates based on the position’s primary location if it has been defined and includes a country. This requires an Admin/Owner role.
